Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro Planar ZE Manual Focus Macro Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras Reviews

I demand a high quality 50mm "normal" lens. Normal lenses spend the most time on my camera, and are useful in practically any situation. I used and ultimately sold several other 50mm lenses before arriving at this Makro-Planar option. Now I have finally found the keeper. Let me explain why:
* Excellent contrast and color reproduction
* Ability to focus from 10" to infinity means I'm Never bumping up against minimum focal distances
* Shooting wider than f/2 isn't, in my opinion, very useful
* Focusing manually is very smooth, helped immensely by the focus confirmation, and more appropriate than auto-focus for most situations
* 270 degrees of rotation on the focus ring allow very precise, minor adjustments to focus
* Results from this lens are repeatedly stunning
* The lens is physically small enough that it causes no portability issues. It feels very comfortable carrying around... Read more

It is almost as sharp as it gets across the whole frame wide open. There are no distortions, and no chromatic aberrations AT ALL. What makes it not quite perfect is the fact that it has more light fade-off (vignetting) wide open than the Canon 50mm f/1.4 does at f/2. I was a little surprised at this. Also the colors are cooler compared to the Canon, and I prefer the warmer color of the Canon (a matter of taste). But this can easily be corrected in post, particularly if you shoot RAW.
It doesn't have auto-focus, of course, another thing preventing it from being "perfect". It does have electronic aperture control, however, and it has "focus confirm", which beeps and lights up when you're in focus. So far I've found the focus confirm to be pretty accurate, perhaps front-focusing a bit at long distances. The focus confirm isn't as accurate as using Live View with magnification, but then neither is... Read more
Love this lens..., May 31, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro Planar ZE Manual Focus Macro Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras (Electronics) ...but I hate to say that the new Canon 100mm Macro L lens is very comparable in terms of image quality. Add auto-focus and image stabilization all for $300 less and it certainly gives this lens a run for its money. Build quality/focus ring might not be quite to the level of Zeiss but I would seriously consider switching to the Canon if I did not do so much video. The Zeiss is a joy to manual focus.
