Incredible, January 7, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM Lens (Accessory) This is an incredible lense. Photo quality is awesome. However, if you don't notice the size and weight when buying you may get surprised when it arrives. It is big and heavy but you get used to it. You'll need an external flash if you want to shoot people or things that are close, as it causes a shadow (on a Canon 550D with internal flash).
UPDATE: I have been using this for over a year now. Image quality is still perfect, however, it has started to show some zoom creep.

The lighting was mostly indoors tungsten and some fluorescent. The lens did a great job of capturing images with little need for a flash. I also have the 50 mm f1.4, which is also a very good lens, but I found it less useful due to the need to zoom out. The 50 mm acts more like an 80 mm with the 7D.
The negative to be aware of is to do with the nature of low light photography with a wide aperture lens: you have to watch and make sure your depth of field is adequate, or some people in a group may end up being out of focus, if they are not at he same distance from the camera.
Overall, a great lens.

This lens is worth every penny and is so smooth in focusing and zooming. I have used the lens in sun and in an arena and this is fast becoming my "primary lens" for most subjects. In a sunny situation I can crank up the f stops to slow the shutter down and in an arena I can crank down the f stop and stop a hockey puck. I couldn't ask for more. A gem of a lens and tack sharp operation and images.
